Star Trek….Spock-on!

About 20 minutes into JJ Abrams Star Strek, I had a flashback to myself as a young boy sitting in a darkened suburban cinema, frothing at the mouth and barely able to sit still as I watched The Empire Strikes Back. I doubt that feeling of unbridled excitement and awe I felt as I watched Vader reveal his parental lineage to a limbless Luke will ever be matched, but gosh-darn it, Star Trek was evoking a similar sense of excitement in me.
From the first frame, I was sold. Star Trek is a big ball of juicy fun and really sets itself apart from the majority of action blockbusters being released these days. In many respects, this is old fashioned film making; an engaging story, solid action, a villain we love to hate, and of course some great characters to root for.
For me, the Spock/Kirk relationship was the glue that held this baby together. Watching their rocky road to friendship was good fun and held us captivated between the action scenes.
Sure, there was a decent serving of cheese in this intergalactic sandwich, but it was offset by its tastier ingredients and contained enough meat to make it a satisfying meal. Having said that, the film did have a flaw…..one that could have sunk it; Frankly, Kirk is a bit of a dick. His arrogance and demeanor made him seem like a complete tool, and it was only the last quarter of the film that the character redeemed himself enough to become half-likable. Hardly an innocent farm-boy like Skywalker, Kirk is more like that cocky, self righteous jock that used to beat you up behind the toilet block at high school.
But aside from that minor quibble, Star Trek gets the thumbs up and stands tall as one of the best pics of the year.
Drink it in.

Great review Faystar…
I totally agree, I thought this was a thoroughly enjoyable update for the next next-generation of Star Trek fans…and also a well-managed re-imagining of the classic era for the older Trek fans (like myself)…
I’m no Trekkie, but I’m a fan…(esp. the orig films & Next Gen & Voyager)
I dug seeing the old characters reincarnate, and thought that Bones and Spock were DAMN good…and the new Uhura and Chekov and Sulu really grew on me…and Simon Pegg as Scotty was a nice touch…
As for the Kirk thing, I DO hear ya, but to be fair, Kirk was always a bit of dick…
Kirk was always woo-ing some green-skinned beta-quadrant skank…
And he was always Mr. Brass-balls and ready for a fist-a-cuffs…
And even though, he was kinda unlikeable (Chris Pine) at first, I guess it was kinda necessary set-up for Kirk as the quintessential alpha-male hero that he will, um, become/already is…
And by the end, I really dug him too, and I thought he was channelling a pretty damn good early Shatner vibe…was weird…
But yeah, I was sold man…(Plus I was lucky enough to see it San Francisco too, home of Star Fleet Academy, which was pretty special, with a good Trek crowd, complete with a few cheers etc…so it was great atmosphere…
Mad to hear you dug it…

Nice Decoy. Nice.
Fair call on Kirk. I aint no trekkie, (Seen all the movies, never got into the show) so I wasn’t sure why he was being set up like such an arrogant dude…but sounds fair enough now, and he DID become likeable by the end.
You know, your right, there was some really spooky moments where Chris Pine did channel Shatner. Just the way he moved even….was creepy as. I do wish Shatner popped up somewhere though. Might have been cheesy, but I’m a big fan of the Shat and would have grinned uncontrollably.
Would have been great seeing it in San Fran too. Wasn’t at the Castro was it? That would’ve been even cooler…
I remember seeing Revenge of the Sith at Universal Studios in LA on opening day. Twas a full-on geek-fest, costumes and all…but a damn enjoyable vibe.
cheers again Decoy.

Yeah, I geeked out about this movie myself!
Seeing them breathe life back into the old franchise (After the last movie STANK!) was right up there with watching my favorite comic book episode on the big screen.
RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER
When Dr. Doom stole the power cosmic (Sigh) I was a kid again.

hehe….I hear ya Larry. It’s always nice when that inner child gets let loose during a movie.
