Hellboy II: The Golden Army…….Monkey Shines!

I would never tell him to his face, but Ron Perlman looks a bit like a monkey. There I said it….and I mean it in the nicest possible way. I am a fan. Thing is, his ape features have earned him some great and twisted roles in his time. It’s no real secret that he has a unique looking mug, but I think it’s a real shame that his neanderthal characteristics have prevented him becoming a true acting legend, up there with the greats. Mark my words kids, he truly is an intense and criminally underrated actor who has shamefully had to hide behind thick makeup most of his career. Come on Hollywood, give this guy a gritty lead role (like he did in Beauty and the Beast, but this time without the makeup). Let him show his true colors and watch the accolades come rolling in. Not to mention the Oscars.

Where was I? Oh yes, Hellboy 2….what can I say? Great film. Better than the original. It has action, humor and heart. With such a rich visual style, Guillermo Del Toro truly is the modern master of creative cinema and quickly becoming my favorite director.

Hellboy 2 is a rare blockbuster, and an even rarer sequel. It never feels like it is stuck in neutral, it feels fresh and exciting throughout.

Bring on Hellboy 3. And long live Ron Perlman!
